Isaac the Great

Isaac the Great
(c. 350–440)
   Patriarch, Poet and Saint.
Isaac was the son of the sixth Armenian Patriarch (Catholicos). He was educated at Constantinople, married, and, once widowed, became a monk. In 390, he himself became Catholicos and he negotiated the independence of the Armenian Church from the See of Caesarea. He was very popular, and he encouraged the development of an Armenian literature. He is venerated as a hymn writer and two days in the Armenian Church calendar are set aside to his memory.
